Yamaguchi – Tsunoshima

01/18/2020

If you are in Yamaguchi prefecture, Tsunoshima is one of the places you must visit. It is a little island in the north west of Yamaguchi prefecture and located in the Sea of Japan. It is about an hour and a half drive from the Ube airport. To get to the island, you will have to cross the Long Tsunoshima Bridge completed in the year 2000.

You can enjoy the ocean view while driving on the bridge and also, the Tsunoshima lighthouse is one of the landmarks in the Tsunoshima island. During the Meiji era, the government recognized the importance of the lighthouse in the Sea of Japan and hired Richard Henry Brunton to help construct the lighthouse so that they can keep coastal waters safe and prevent foreign ships from approaching the country. The light house was built in 1875 and was the first western style lighthouse in the Sea of Japan.

During the summer, people can swim in the ocean and relax on the beach. It is not as crowded as the beaches in Okinawa but definitely one of the most beautiful oceans in Japan.
